Product stewardship

Confirm the exact product.

Check the full product name, formulation and pack size on your quotation. Similar names do not mean products are interchangeable.

Ask for the applicable label.

Ask Intaba for the locally applicable product label and confirm the intended crop and use. Follow that label and qualified advice for use, handling and storage.

Keep the purchase details.

Retain your invoice and the product’s batch information. Ask the team to clarify any unclear date or packaging detail before you buy.

Section 2 of 4

Identify the product properly

Use the full product name

Crop protection names are easily confused, and similar names can be very different products. Write down the complete name including any numbers and letters after it, exactly as it appears on the pack.

Check the formulation code

Codes such as WP, SC, EC or WG describe the formulation. The same active ingredient in a different formulation can behave differently in your sprayer and on your crop. Confirm the code, not just the name.

Note the pack size you are being offered

Confirm the pack size and the quantity before agreeing a price. Comparing prices between different pack sizes is where most buying mistakes happen.

Ask what the pack should look like

Ask Intaba what the genuine pack, label and seal look like for the product you are buying, and buy from a source you can go back to.

Section 3 of 4

Read the label before you buy

Check the crop is on the label

A product is approved for specific crops. If your crop is not on the label, it is not approved for your crop, whatever else you are told. Ask Intaba for the applicable local label.

Check the target pest or disease

Confirm that what you are trying to control is what the product is approved to control. Bring the problem you actually have rather than the product someone recommended.

Check the pre-harvest interval

This is the minimum time between the last application and harvest. If you are close to harvest, or selling to a buyer with residue requirements, this number can rule a product out entirely.

Check what protection is required

Read what the label requires for handling, mixing and application, and be sure you have it before you buy. If you cannot meet the requirement, do not buy the product.

Section 4 of 4

Keep the paperwork

Keep the receipt and the batch number

Keep proof of what you bought, from whom and when, together with the batch number from the pack. If a question ever arises about the product or the crop, this is the first thing you will be asked for.

Record every application

Product, rate, date, which block, the weather and who applied it. Many buyers now ask for this record, and it is the only reliable way to work out what did and did not work.

Store it properly and dispose of it correctly

Ask Intaba how the product should be stored and how empty containers should be handled. Store crop protection away from seed, feed, food and people.
